Many of you may have already heard about this travel incident yesterday, but I thought I would add it to my blog. It is remarkable that there was not back up system available to help those stranded passengers.

"Brace yourself: Transatlantic flights set to be bumpier, costlier"
From CNN: "According to a paper published in the scientific journal, Nature, climate change will significantly increase turbulence over the North Atlantic, a popular route between North America and Europe."

Travelling by Trains
There are many reasons why travelling has become more difficult today than ever before, but why have we not addressed the underlying issues.
Changes in travel: more people trying to get from A to B, different modes of transportation, infrastructure, just to name a few. The results are more congestion, longer waiting times, frustration, regulation, and increased disappointment.
I recently travelled by train from Edinburgh to London. This was my first trip on this route for 2013. I was nervous given my history of train travel. On reflection, the Acela is still one of the best trains for travelling.
Here are my pros and cons of travelling on UK/Scottish rail:
Some pros include a nice hot meal (at least in First Class) and unlimited tea and coffee to keep you awake. The scenery is best at the beginning of the trip if you start in Edinburgh and if you manage to find a somewhat 'faster' train (meaning that it takes less than 5 hours to get from A to B) then you are in luck. Six stops is certainly better than 12!
Unfortunately, there are quite a few cons of travelling across the country by train.
These cons include spotty wifi/wireless, so the Internet is very slow and frequently looses connection. Every few minutes I would get the following error message:
" An error occurred while trying to save or publish your post. Please try again"
It should be noted that the wifi is only free if you travel in first class. The seats are quite small even in First Class. The ticket prices are extremely varied (ranging from super high to somewhat reasonable not including the wireless). I did a price compare with a flight on Air France from Edinburgh to London City Airport and it was much cheaper. It is clear that someone's schedule and need for speed (timetable) might dictate which mode of transportation one takes. Finally, you can't get any tomato juice which I think is a classic travel drink. I guess I won't be drinking any virgin or bloody Mary's like I could on the Acela trains.
Overall, I am not yet sold on this form of transportation to get from Edinburgh to London. If they could bring the Acela over here, I would probably choose to travel this way more often.

More travel ahead
I have a bunch more travelling over the next month: Highlands & Islands of Scotland, London and New York, so I am sure to have some stories to share. In the meantime, could Scotland finally be getting high speed rail? They sure could use it up north!
